Can Student Nurses Blog Their Way to NCLEX Success?

What is NCLEX?  NCLEX is an acronym for the National Council License Examination.  All student nurses take this exam upon graduation in order to practice nursing. I wonder if blogging could aid in supporting student nurse success on this exam on first attempt.  Blogs were discussed in my readings as being a tool that could increase students visit and revisit of topics.  This type of inquiry increases the contact students have with the blog content.  I believe that continued contact with subject matter will support analytic and critical thinking skills.  I am so new to the uses of technology in education.  I am not sure what strategy would be best or most helpful to nursing student gaining varying perspectives and approaches to the content areas on this exam.  I am interested in trying blogging based on the ease of creating the blog site.  I am nervous because of my level of knowledge about the whole process of blogging. I just need to “begin” and see what unfolds.  What suggestions do you have that would help me initiate a blogging experience for my nursing students?

  2. You know, blogging can be a little fearful if you never tried it. But through this exercise I believe we all have learned how easy it is to create a blog. Not to mention, it is a great resource for students and I am sure it will be a great reference for the students who have to take the NCFLEX examination.

Implementing a blog of such would be most helpful. However, there may be other blogs online that cater to the same topic. You may be able to research that as a starting point.

  3. Umm, that is an interesting question. I would think that nursing students could use blogs to gain a better understanding about various topics that might be on the exam. An instructor could post a question that might relate to a major issue or subject matter that all nursing students should know and begin collecting the students' thoughts on the subject. Maybe afterwards a good discussion of the subject matter would entice the students to conduct some research about that topic and then post in their own words what they found. This is just a thought.

  4. This is a very educational and interesting blog. I am fascinated with the field of nursing and healthcare as a whole.

I agree with BBop in that blogging may be a useful tool for posting topics related to your subject matter, and collecting students' thoughts. I like how Dr. Mosley provides questions as a guide for understanding our reading material, and honing in on the most important information.

We used journaling in our Adult Education curriculum as a means to make meaning of the material, as well as to create a study guide for the comprehensive exam.

  5. Blogging would be a great asset to the nursing students. They would be able to share their thoughts and share videos, pictures, articles, educational links etc. with one another.

I never created a blog before until taking this class. I found this activity to be both fun and engaging and I am sure your nursing students will appreciate the experience as well.

  6. Yes, if you’re unfamiliar with blogging it may seem fearful at first but, like T.S. Long stated, it’s easy to create and blogging can in fact be a great resource for your students. I too agree that the students could potentially use blogging to review after lecture, convey their personal thoughts, or you could mainly use blogging to foster interaction between you and your students about certain topics.
